November 20, 2009 Germany has overtaken both Italy and Spain in a key travel indicator in European tourism, the volume of hotel bookings, bank economists in Berlin said on Wednesday, 18th November. In the first eight months of 2009, German hotels provided 346.6 million overnight lodgings, down 0.8 per cent from a year ago, reported the Federation of German Savings Banks. The trade in Italy and Spain, where tourism is a major sector, slumped badly in that period, meaning Germany was now Europe's leader. The number is calculated according to each person lodged, multiplied by how many nights they stay.
