Germany announces second round nominations for 450-member Olympics squad

Completing the second round of nominations for the Beijing Olympics, the German Olympics Sports federation, DOSB has nominated another 125 athletes for its 450-strong Olympics squad. These athletes will travel to Beijing for the world’s greatest sporting event beginning 8th August 2008.

Andreas Dittmer, Olympics champion in canoeing, the swimmers Britta Steffen and Helege Meeuw, gymnastics world champion Fabian Hambuechen and world number two in Mountain- bike Sabine Spitz were nominated for the summer Olympics. Besides these, athletes from Judo, modern pentathlon, wrestling, rowing, shooting, archery, swimming, water diving, were also nominated. Names of the doctors and physiotherapists of the teams were also part of the announcement made on 23rd June in Frankfurt.

DOSB has now picked a total of 204 athletes, including the 79 who were already given a ticket to the Games in late May. A final nomination round is set for 15th July, eight days ahead of the International Olympic Committee 23rd July deadline. The first athletes leave for China on 24th July. In the third round of nominations, athletes from football, hockey, handball, volleyball, water polo, road and BMX cycling and weightlifters will be nominated for the Beijing Olympics.

According to DOSB, a total of 450 German athletes will travel to China. They will be joined by a functional team of 300 members, including trainers, doctors and coaches.

The team will be lead by DOSB General-director, Michael Vesper, who is very confident of a good performance by the German team. Germany won sixth position in the 2004 Olympics, with 13 Gold, 16 Silver and 20 Bronze medals.
