3rd Indo-German sustainability conference on water and waste management in Delhi
February 02, 2010 The 3rd Indo-German Conference on Science for Sustainability is being held at the IIT Delhi, New Delhi, on 3 and 4 February 2010, back-to-back with the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit. Science and technology plays a key role in meeting the global challenges of sustainable development and resource efficiency. In order to intensify the cooperation between Germany and India in this important area, the German Minister of Education and Research Dr. Annette Schavan and her then Indian counterpart Kapil Sibal signed a Joint Declaration on Research Cooperation on Science for Sustainability in September 2008. ![]() At the same time the first Science for Sustainability dialogue was held in New Delhi. The organisers were the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the Department for Science and Technology (DST) of the Government of India. Approximately 80 representatives from science, politics, industry and civil society took part. The second conference on Science for Sustainability was held in Bonn in April 2009 with a focus on land use and energy issues. The third Indo-German conference on Science and Sustainability will focus on water and waste management. IIT Delhi will host the conference which is organised by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) , Indian Department for Science and Technology (DST) and the United Nations University, Germany. The goal of this Indo-German Conference is to define strategic common areas between India and Germany in the fields of water and waste management- research and development and to build a network between key actors. The networks are expected to generate research, development and innovation alliances for the better use of scientific and technological knowledge. The two-day event will consist of talks and discussions on various aspects of water and waste management such as water quality, water efficiency, irrigation, sustainable agriculture practises, impact of climate change on availability of water, ground water issues in India, water leakage and biological waste management. Leading scientists and academicians from universities in Germany and India will participate in the conference.
