India's teen prodigy to race for German Motorsports Team

April 08, 2008

Leading German racing team Ma Con Motorsports has roped in India’s young racing sensation Ashwin Sundar with a sponsorship of three years to race in the German Formula Volkswagen ADAC Championship 2008.

17 year old Ashwin, reigning National champion in the Formula LGB Swift Class, is among the eight drivers chosen after three testing sessions held in Germany on 28th and 29th February. They drove Formula Konig testing cars with the Volkswagen engine.

Announcing Ashwin as his new find in New Delhi on April 7th, owner of the Ma Con Motorsport team Marian Hamprecht said that the young racer had an impressive finish even though he raced in unaccustomed weather. ''We are happy to have Ashwin Sundar in our team for the next three years. He has shown immense talent by winning the testing sessions held in Germany in February 2008 at Ma Con motorsports' own test circuit. ''

The Chennai-born teenager, who is pursuing his academics through correspondence, has proved his mettle in international races like the Asia Road Racing Championship to finish first runner-up in under-21. He also became the Indian national racing champion in two-wheelers category and was declared as ‘Champion of Champions 2006.

The Formula Volkswagen ADAC championship consists of eight rounds of races to be held on various circuits in Germany. Should Ashwin finish among the top three or win at least one of the races, he can look forward to racing in the F3 German series next year.

Naturally, Ashwin is very excited about his new assignment. He said, ''I hope to do really well in the formula ADAC championship, which would pave the way for me to get to the Formula-3 European series. '' The sportsman, who looks up to Narayan Kartikeyan and Michael Schumacher as his role models, said that though Formula one is a dream, right now his focus is on the upcoming ADAC Championship.
