Germany, EU condemn bomb attack in Kabul

July 08, 2008

Several dozen people, including staff members of the Indian Mission were killed, and well over a hundred people injured in a bomb attack yesterday (7th July) in front of the Indian Embassy in Kabul. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier and European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana condemned the attack.

The German Foreign Minister issued the following statement in Berlin on 7th July:

"The Federal Government condemns in the strongest possible terms today's murderous attack near the Indian Embassy in Kabul which cost the lives of numerous innocent bystanders. We share the Afghan people's shock and sadness, and also assure the Indian Government of our sympathy.

We express our sincere condolences to the victims' families and relatives, and our thoughts are with the many injured. We wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

The terrorists' aim is to prevent the establishment of law, order and democracy in Afghanistan. For that reason we are counting on the Afghan authorities to work swiftly – the instigators of this attack must be apprehended and brought to justice immediately."

EU’s Javier Solana denounced the terrorist attack in front of the Indian Embassy. "I hope that the Afghan Government will find and bring to justice those behind this barbaric act. Such actions, which are clearly intended to undermine the process of stabilisation and reconstruction in Afghanistan, will achieve nothing,'' he said in a statement.

Solana conveyed his most sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to the families of the victims and to the Afghan and Indian authorities. “The European Union remains fully committed to long-term support for the people and government of Afghanistan in their efforts to build a democratic and stable state”, he added.
