Pakistani Olympics shooter trains in Germany

July 10, 2008

A six member Pakistan Rifle Shooting Team is in Germany on an eight-week intensive training programme with the German Shooting Federation. Pakistan’s Beijing Olympics-bound Siddique Umer is part of this team.

The six shooters including three women, have been sent to Germany to train for the upcoming South Asian shooting championship to be held at the end of 2009 in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka. The training will be conducted under the guidance of expert German coaches. Manager-cum-Chief Coach, Lt. Col. Iftikhar Hussain Shah is also accompanying the six shooter squad to Germany.

Whilst the rest of the team will stay on in Wiesbaden until the end of August 2008, Siddique Umer will return before the end of July 2008 to proceed to Beijing for the Olympics. Siddique Umer has been given a wild-card entry in the shooting competitions of Beijing Olympics 2008 to be held from 8th to 24th August.

Khalid Javed, Secretary General of the National Rifle Association of Pakistan said that the tour will help the national shooters to learn more about the game from experienced coaches of the academy. The academy works under the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) based at Munich.

Javed said that the reason for choosing the German Shooting Federation is that German shooting coaches are considered to be the best in the world. “We cannot imagine the sport of shooting without thinking of Germany.”  The National Rifle Shooting Federation of Pakistan is also planning a training programme for the pistol shooting team at the German Shooting Federation next year.

The German Shooting Federation is the fourth largest of the leading German Sports Associations today and administers the needs of some 1.5 million shooters from more than 14,800 clubs in regional organisations. Apart from the known Olympic disciplines for Rifle, Pistol and Clay Target shooting and Archery, the German Shooting Federation also caters other sporting disciplines such as Running Target, Muzzle-loading shooting, Field Archery, Crossbow shooting, Summerbiathlon and Ski Archery.
