German film in Cannes festival short list

April 25, 2008

German director Wim Wenders has made the short list at the 61st Cannes Film Festival, to be held from 14th – 25th May 2008. He competes for the coveted Palme d'Or against 18 other directors with his latest film, 'The Palermo Shooting'.

Wim Wenders is one of the most important representatives of the New German Cinema – Autorenkino. He has made masterpieces such as The State of Things and Paris, Texas, and has had successful showings at the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals. Wenders has shown 15 films at Cannes over the course of his career and taken home five awards, including a Palme d'Or for 'Paris Texas' in 1984. He was the last German director to be awarded the top prize at Cannes.

German cinema has witnessed a breathtaking freshness of ideas and international acclaim ever since the international breakthrough of 'Run Lola Run' by Tom Tykwer. The German Film Academy, founded in 2003, now awards German Oscars – the Lolas – once a year. New German films have also scored successes internationally. In 2002, Caroline Link won an Oscar for 'Nowhere in Africa' and in 2007 Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck won the cherished trophy for his film 'The Lives of Others'. The same year, Turkish-born German filmmaker Fatih Akin was awarded the prize for best script and a special prize at Cannes for his film 'The Edge of Heaven'.

This year, Wenders will compete against Hollywood directors Clint Eastwood ('The Changeling' with Angelina Jolie) and Steven Soderbergh ('Guerilla', based on the life of Che Guevara), as well as other directors from Belgium, Turkey, France, Argentina, Brazil and Italy.

Wenders' love for America, the seemingly endless landscape and the pictures of the grandiose countryside, reflects in his fascination for films set against this backdrop. 'The Palermo Shooting' follows a German photographer (played by Campino, singer of German punk band Die Toten Hosen) who goes to Palermo seeking a new start in life. Wenders also has Hollywood stars Dennis Hopper (Blue Velvet) and Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) on board for his film.
