On Monday, 27 June, the European Commission, together with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) launched a new Strategic Framework of Cooperation to address food insecurity and malnutrition worldwide. more

With strong backing from Europe and the United States, French finance minister Christine Lagarde has been named as the new head of the International Monetary Fund. Her appointment was hailed by German finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble as "an excellent choice." European Union Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs announced a 54 million euro contribution towards Bangladesh’s next primary education sector programme (PEDP3). Piebalgs announced a further 52 million euros to provide education for 500,000 children through non-formal primary schools. more

“The euro is our common currency,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel affirmed during a European Council meeting in Brussels. The heads of state and government of the European Union are determined to stabilise the euro as a whole and to keep it stable. They hope to achieve this through systematic consolidation programmes in Greece, Portugal and Ireland, as well as through additional community aid for Greece, from public and private funds. more

Asian and European foreign ministers are meeting in Budapest on 6th and 7th June for talks on new security challenges, including cyber crime, food security, water management and piracy at sea. Other questions on the agenda include terrorism, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and organised crime as well as the movement of people fleeing crisis zones. EU Vice President and High Representative Catherine Ashton chairs the annual meeting. more
