Studying in Germany with the DAAD

December 07, 2009

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. The agency offers programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers and others in higher education. Since its’ founding in 1925 the DAAD has supported nearly 1.5 million scholars with funding.

The DAAD also supports the internationalisation of German universities as well as promotes German studies and the German language abroad. In developing countries, the DAAD assists in establishing effective universities and advises decision makers on matters of cultural, education and development policy.

Opened in 1960 the DAAD regional office New Delhi has been active in the area. In India, the DAAD is involved in scientist exchange programmes with Indian institutes such as the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and the University Grants Commission (UGC).In 2008, 846 Indian students went to Germany through DAAD exchanges. Out of the total DAAD India alumni of 5,202 students, mathematics and natural sciences are the favoured subjects (34%) followed by engineering (31%). Nine percent are students of language and cultural studies.

With the new initiative “A New Passage to India” the DAAD aims to kindle interest among German students of all disciplines and courses to study, carry out research or gain experience in the working environment in India, and to encourage Indian students to gain the same experiences in Germany.

Worldwide, the DAAD runs over 250 programmes, through which it annually funds more than 55,000 German and foreign scholars worldwide. These programmes range from semesters abroad for undergraduates to doctoral programmes, from internships to visiting lectureships, and from information-gathering visits to assisting with the establishment of new universities abroad.
