Another boost to Indo-German coop in Science & Research: Humbolt Foundation strengthens relationship with India

March 19, 2008

The Alexander von Humbolt Foundation is determined to boost up the Indo-German Science Dialogue with its new Indo-German Frontiers of Engineering-Programme. The programme is aimed to bring together the new generation scientists from both the countries and facilitate the exchange of ideas through organising interdisciplinary symposia and discussions.

The Indo-German Frontiers of Engineering Conferences are the first step in strengthening co-operation in the field of engineering between two countries. Under this venture the Humbolt Foundation and Department of Science and Technology of Government of India brings together about 60 Indian and German engineers. The conferences which take place alternately in both the countries provide an opportunity to the scientists to gain much needed insights into the current scenario of science in their partner country.

The Department of Science and Technology of Government of India and the Humbolt Foundation have signed a Science Cooperation Agreement in Berlin on February 21st. Regular Science conferences and research opportunities in both the countries are the main elements of this agreement.

Traditionally India has been a close partner of Germany in the field of Science and Research. Science, Technology and engineering- core elements for economic success- have become a key pillar of Indo-German relations. On the occasion of EU-India science summit organised under the German EU presidency in New Delhi 2007, India became partner in 1.2 billion euro FAIR(Facility of Antiproton and Ion research) project. A large number of research projects are happening between India and Germany at the moment, supported by the organisations such as German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Research Foundation (DFG). At the same time Germany is home to world class research Institutions like Max Planck Institutes and Fraunhofer Institutes, which are active in India.

Indo-German cooperation in the field of science and technology goes back long way and has brought out common projects like IIT Madras, which Germany helped to build as the partner country. Indo-German research programmes have covered a broad variety of fields including space research, nanotechnology and energy.
