Germany is the country of researchers and innovations -- ‘Made in Germany’ has often changed the world. A highly-developed university and research landscape and high quality of academic training shape the scientific-research system here. German scientists and research institutes are world leaders in nanotechnology, biomedicine and medical engineering, in environmental research and automotive engineering. Germans also play their part in the world's top groups in the future fields of optical technologies, microsystems engineering, neurosciences, biotechnology and process engineering.

Foreign companies also recognise Germany as a researchers’ storehouse. Some 12.1 billion euros per year are invested in Germany from outside the country, making it one of the world’s largest research locations for foreign companies. With language being no barrier, ‘Destination Germany’ is a major attraction for a large number of foreign researchers and students. Almost all German universities offer English degree courses. The German Research Foundation (DFG), along with DAAD and the Humboldt Foundation, offer a one-stop information service to students, researchers and scientists from around the world.

Research in Germany: Siemens researchers work on safe 'Sandbox' for the internet of the future / copyright picture alliance/chromorange Safe 'Sandbox' for the internet of the future
To better protect new Internet applications against hacker attacks and other types of manipulation, Germany's Siemens is taking part in the EUs WebSand research project. The project will develop technology to help protect users who surf dynamic, interactive websites and create a protected environment in which information can be used only in a controlled manner.  more
Research in Germany: Two robotic arms are at work cutting a metal plate with a laser cutter / copyright dpa - International Lasers take the lead
Conserving energy is a top priority for auto manufacturers today. Laser technology can help. Fraunhofer scientists in Germany are presenting new production technologies that use lasers to process thin light-weight components made of fibre-composite materials, as well as to manufacture more efficient engines and more powerful batteries.  more
Research in Germany: German labs overcome ferroelectric data storage hurdle / copyright Colourbox German labs overcome ferroelectric data storage hurdle
A team of scientists at two German government laboratories have come up with a new technique that could pave the way for an alternative to flash memory, the solid-state, low-power drive that has already begun to replace traditional hard drives in smartphones, music players and newer laptops.  more
Research in Germany: Creating high value products from CO2 / copyright Colourbox Creating high value products from CO2
When we think of carbon dioxide, a number of common uses for the chemical compound leap to mind. But above all, CO2 is probably best known for one thing for being a potential culprit behind climate change. Scientists and researchers in Germany are now working to turn the tide of climate change with new technologies that convert CO2 emissions into useful substances for business and industry.  more

Alcohol-free beer has always had a poor reputation, largely due to its unusual taste. However opinion of the beverage could be about to change thanks to a new recipe developed at Berlin's Technical University.  more
Research in Germany: German researchers support automobile industry to develop resource-friendly cars / copyright dpa - Report Resource-friendly cars from Germany
Magnesium instead of steel this could be an option for lightweight car body parts. A car door made of magnesium is roughly 50 percent lighter. This is one of the exhibits researchers at the Fraunhofer AutoMOBILE Production Alliance are showcasing at the Hanover Fair.  more
Research in Germany: German scientists display giant batteries for green power at the Hanover fair / copyright picture alliance/Image Source Giant batteries for green power at the Hanover fair
In the future, the growing amounts of solar and wind energy will need to be stored for dark or low-wind periods. One solution is redox flow batteries that can supply current for up to 2,000 households. Several Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany are working jointly on these fluid batteries of the future, which are being presented at the Hanover Fair from 4th 8th April.  more
Research in Germany: Berlin-based researchers shoot world's fastest 'film' / copyright Colourbox Berlin-based researchers shoot world's fastest 'film'
How can you record extremely dynamic molecular reactions and make visible such complex processes as influenza viruses entering human cells? German physicists have now found an answer.  more
Research in Germany: University of Bremen seeks applicants for research scholarship / copyright picture alliance/chromorange University of Bremen seeks applicants for research scholarship
The University of Bremen is seeking applicants for the Bremen Research Scholarship in order to strengthen their research branches and support students and young academics from abroad. Research at the University of Bremen is structured into six high-profile areas Ocean and Climate Research, Material Science, Information-Cognition-Communication, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Logistics.  more
