      Call for applications for 2012 Humboldt Alumni Award
Humboldt Foundation alumni can apply for the 2012 Humboldt Alumni Award for Innovative Networking Initiatives. The Humboldt Foundation grants these awards, which are valued at up to 25,000 euro each, in recognition of initiatives launched by its fellows and award winners abroad. At its meeting on 31st March, the German Federal Cabinet approved a draft bill that will also allow the spouses of researchers coming to Germany from abroad to engage in gainful employment without any restrictions. Helge Braun, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister of Education and Research (BMBF), welcomed the draft bill on rights of residence which was approved by the Cabinet.  more

One-third of the world's population is currently infected with tuberculosis (TB). The World TB Day on 24th March marks the day in 1882 when German scientist Dr Robert Koch detected the TB bacillus. This was a first step towards diagnosing and curing tuberculosis. The currently available TB vaccine BCG is over 90 years old and its effectiveness is declining. Max Planck scientists in Berlin have developed an improved vaccine that is showing positive results in clinical trials.  more
