German trade fairs come to India

February 15, 2008

The Indian trade fair market has seen a lot of activity in the last few years and is expected to see even more in 2008 with more German trade fair firms entering India. At the same time participation in German fairs is high on the Indian agenda.

Hanover-based Deutsche Messe AG organised its first trade fair in India recently. Deutsche Messe AG is the organiser of the Hanover Fair and CeBIT information technology exhibition. The German firm made its debut in India with the Industrial Automation INDIA, the MDA INDIA, a fair for motion and drive technology, and the logistics exhibition CeMAT INDIA at the recently opened Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in Bangalore in December 2007.

In September 2007, Germany’s Messe Munchen International (MMI) launched its Indian subsidiary with an office in Mumbai. The Munich-based company will hold its first trade fair in India, called ‘electronicIndia’, from September 2 to 5, 2008 at the BIEC.

In the textile sector, Messe Frankfurt’s Indian subsidiary, Messe Frankfurt Trade Fairs India Pvt Ltd, organised the Heimtextil India, Texworld India and Techtextil India in October 2007. The Frankfurt-based trade fair company will hold its next Heimtextil India and Texworld India in October 2008, at the Bombay Exhibition Centre, Mumbai.

In 2002, Koelnmesse International GmbH, promoters of Germany's Cologne international trade fairs, announced major plans for a presence in the Asian region with a special focus on India. Since then the German firm has organized various trade fairs on the food sector in India. In 2008, Koelnmesse has scheduled at least seven food fairs in various parts of the country.

Indian participation in German fairs continues to be high. For the ITB-Berlin Travel and Tourism fair, to be held in March 2008, over 100 participants from leading Indian hotels like the Grand and Claridges as well as officials from the Ministry of Tourism are expected to visit the show.
