• German efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza

Germany called on Sunday, 4th January for efforts towards a ceasefire in Gaza to intensify but said that any truce must ensure Israel's long-term security. German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her concern about the continuing hostilities in the Middle East during a telephone conversation with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Sunday.

• Record 40 million Germans with jobs in 2008

A record 40.3 million people were employed in Germany in 2008, according to figures released by the German Federal Office of Statistics.The record numbers of employment last year was the highest number since German unification in 1990, figures showed.

• German Beech forests to be declared part of World Natural Heritage

Germany lies in the centre of the eco-system called the ‘European Beech Forest’. Reason enough to do something for the preservation of this unique biosphere. Yet although roughly a fourth of all copper beeches between the Alps, North Sea and Baltic Sea are still thriving, very few of these forests still radiate their primeval splendour. The remnants are now to be declared part of the world natural heritage and so saved.

At the phæno Wolfsburg technology and science museum visitors can look, feel and touch over 300 exciting phenomena of science and technology. Created by architect Zaha Hadid this futuristic new building spread over 9,000 square metres in Germany’s Wolfsburg provides 250 interactive stations to experiment in nine fields, such as wind and weather, micro and macro, material and light and sight.
