German Films at 3rd Bengalooru International Film Festival 2009 From: 15 Jan, 2009To: 22 Jan, 2009 The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan is contributing two German movies to the 3rd Bengalooru International Film Festival 2009 - the 2007 documentary Elder Blossom and Fatih Akin's debut feature Short Sharp Shock from 1998. In the DVD section, the Festival will show the following German films from the Goethe-Institut Film Archive in Kolkata - Fear Eats the Soul, Good bye Lenin, Sophie Scholl-The Final Days, Summer in Berlin and Yella.
48° Celsius, New Delhi From: 12 Dec, 2008To: 23 Dec, 2008 The Geman Development Cooperation (GTZ) and Goethe Institute/Max Mueller Bhavan New Delhi have come together to celebrate the city of Delhi with a two week cultural fest – 48° Celsius. Set within a backdrop of urban and historical public places of Delhi, the festival will highlight issues of urban environment and ecology.
48°C Public.Art.Ecology, a public cultural festival from 12th to 23rd December, is an experiment set within the capital metropolitan city of Delhi. The ambition of this project is to interrogate the staggering ecology of the city through the medium of contemporary art.

Hans-Ulrich Treichel, poet and novelist and a professor at the German Literature Institute has developed a literary reputation in Germany for writing which is humorous and yet challenging. He enjoyed huge popular and critical success with the publication of his first major prose work, Lost (Der Verlorene) in 1998. Among many other awards he has received the Hermann-Hesse-Prize (2005) and the Eichendorff-Prize (2006). Lost has been translated into twenty-one languages and has been made into a film. It was translated into English by Carol Brown Janeway. Hans-Ulrich Treichel will read from his book Lost. The reading is followed by a talk moderated by Urvashi Butalia (Zubaan Books).
The International week of Justice Festival: Short films on Human Rights, New Delhi From: 05 Dec, 2008To: 10 Dec, 2008
To mark the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 2008 the Goethe-Institute, in collaboration with the foundation Remembrance, Responsibility and Future initiated an International Short Film Competition for the students of film colleges in various countries. Nine award-winning productions on the theme of human rights are being presented at the International week of Justice organized by Amnesty International India.
The festival will highlight the issues of death penalty, disappearances, war on terror, prison experiences and trials and the freedom of expression, with a special focus on journalists and artists.
Art, Space and the City-A visual documentation From: 03 Dec, 2008To: 19 Dec, 2008
In keeping with its engagement with art and the public space, and also to fulfil the need for a platform for young and emerging photographers the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan has organised 'Art, Space and the City', a photo exhibition on art and culture in the public spaces of Bangalore. This is part of a larger project aimed at raising awareness of the importance of public spaces in Bangalore which are disappearing rapidly, in the name of modernisation, commercialisation of land and expanding infrastructure.´
The photographers involved in the project set about to try and figure out, in how far spaces in Bangalore that can be deemed public in the sense of more or less uninhibited access – like streets, parks, tanks, neighbourhoods, cricket grounds etc. – are used for cultural and/or artistic activities.
The exhibition will include a Meet-the-Artists session between 4.00 and 6.30 p.m. on Saturday, december 13, 2008 at the Bhavan.

Max Mueller Memorial lecture, Mumbai From: 12 Dec, 2008To: 12 Dec, 2008 Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya come together to constitute the annual Max Mueller Memorial Lecture, commemorating the eminent Indologist Friedrich Max Mueller (December 6, 1823 – October 28, 1900).
The pioneering lecture in this series will be delivered by Prof. Dietmar Rothermund, Professor of Modern South Indian History. The title of the lecture is: Max Mueller's Science of Language and Religion. The lecture will offer an insight into the body of work of Friedrich Max Müller as an Orientalist. Professor Rothermund will also speak about Max Müller´s significant role as one of the founders of the western academic field of Indian studies, who virtually created the discipline of comparative religion.
The Goethe-Institut branches in India are named after Max Mueller to celebrate his mammoth contribution to the field of Indology that remains unsurpassable to date.

This series on the theme of human rights has been put together by the Remembrance, Responsibility and Future Foundation and the Goethe-Institut and includes award winners from the Second International Short Film Competition with entries from Germany, Estonia, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, the Czech Republic, the Ukraine and the USA.
Nulltarif - Rock Concert From: 24 Nov, 2008To: 27 Nov, 2008 Nulltarif are so called Newcomers who rock! Their mainstream oriented “PUSSYPROCK” is a masala mix of punk, rock and pop with German lyrics, combined with an intoxicating performance. The band has established itself in Germany through more than 200 performances and the three boys have now hit the stages of France and England. Nulltarif recently released their first album “Licht aus!” (Lights off!). During their shows in Mumbai and Pune at the end of November they will present their new hits to an indian audience for the first time.
To See Is To Change: A Parallax view of German Video Art, 1963-2004 From: 15 Nov, 2008To: 17 Nov, 2008 In association with Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, CAMP are inviting a number of artists, critics and intellectuals to "curate", comment, add on and revise the "40 Years of German Video Art" collection with their own experiences. Thomas Siffling Trio: Jazz Concert From: 20 Nov, 2008To: 29 Nov, 2008 Thomas Siffling and his Trio manage a wonderful balance between acoustic Jazz and electronic groove music. Through the well-directed use of electronic instruments such as the 70s wah wah trumpet sound or a trumpet played with delay and particular applications of, e.g. a Cayon, a Darabukka, or an African drum the sound spectrum of the Trio is widely amplified. This leads to diversified entertainment of the audience. The music of the Trio is for the young and the young at heart, for fans of both electronic and groovy Jazz music. The Jazz concert will be held across South Asia - on November 20 in Colombo, on November 21 in Chennai, on November 26 in Kolkata and November 29 in Mumbai.
Film: Berlin Alexanderplatz From: 14 Nov, 2008To: 16 Nov, 2008 After being released from prison, Franz is determined to finally lead a decent life. But it is difficult to get used to living outside of prison again. In the local bar, he meets Reinhold, leader of a gang of criminals. Unable to convince Franz to join the gang, Reinhold gets him to take a drive with them one night. When Franz realizes that they are on their way to a job, he refuses to participate and is thrown out of the car while it is still moving. Franz survives, but loses his right arm. The film will be played in Chennai.

The Sixth Kalpanirjhar International Short Fiction Film Festival 2008, scheduled for 1-5 November 2008 at Max Mueller Bhavan Kolkata, expects a larger number of entries this year and larger crowds of viewers. A national jury will select the best film out of entries selected for screening at the Fifth Festival for the Patton Award of Rs 20,000 only for the best Indian entry. All entries to the Festival must have been made on or after 1 January 2007.
The European Higher Education Fair From: 12 Nov, 2008To: 14 Nov, 2008 The European Higher Education Fair New Delhi 2008 (EHEF) will be held on 13 and 14 November in New Delhi, India. The European Commission will provide information on the European Union as well as on funding opportunities for individuals and cooperation initiatives in the field of higher education. In addition, official representatives from higher education institutions and their national representations from the EU Member States will offer an overview of their study programmes, enrolment procedures, language requirements, living conditions and other related issues. Prior to the fair, the Commission is organising the India-EU Higher Education Symposium, which will be held on 12 November in New Delhi and which will address EU-Indian higher education policy and cooperation issues.

Photo Stories from Thousand Lights From: 26 Nov, 2008To: 20 Jan, 2009 German photographer Barbara Bechtloff held a photo workshop at the Goethe-Institut Chennai in June 2008, in cooperation with Chennai based photographer Varun Gupta. For inspiration and understanding, participants analysed the works of several contemporary German photographers. The students then documented the street life of the ´Thousand Lights´, an area renowned for its diversity of religion and social levels. The finest images from the workshop will be exhibited at Goethe-Institut Chennai.
