  New Goethe Institutes in Kerala  
     

German is the mother tongue of about a 100 million Europeans and is spoken, according to estimates, by another 80 million people worldwide as a foreign language. It is the second most commonly used scientific language as well as the language of literary mastery and philosophy. Knowledge of German opens up a whole world of opportunities, for jobs in Germany as well as in multinational companies, for specialist vocations like tourism, where German-speaking tourists are the world’s biggest spenders, and for advanced research and studies.

Millions of people around the world are learning German as a foreign language and one of the main centres is the Goethe-Institut, with its headoffice in Munich. The Institute runs 129 centres across 80 countries, besides the 13 centres within Germany. There are nine centres of the Goethe-Institut in South Asia, six across India and one each in Bangladesh, Pakistan and Colombo. From extensive to super-intensive courses, professional courses and distance learning programmes, there are diverse options of learning, improving and continuing with the practice and use of German in everyday life.

The Goethe Institute has added one more Goethe Centre to its chain of Institutions in India. The German cultural centre will inaugurate a Goethe Centre in Trivandrum in Kerala on 28th November. Goethe Institute Kolkata has tied up with Descon Limited to teach German language to IT professionals.  more

From 14th to 16th November, 21st Expolingua Berlin, the only international fair for languages and cultures in Europe’s German-speaking region, played host to about 15,000 visitors from various walks of life. The fair brought together the latest products and services related to language learning and teaching, under one roof.  more

The Goethe-Institut is now in Second Life, the virtual internet world that is entirely created and developed by its inhabitants. On the Second Life island of the Goethe-Institut there are videos, introductory German courses, a moderated German get together and a cultural programme. A live concert by the singer Bernd Begemann launched the project on Monday, 28th July 2008.  more

Germany’s Schools: Partners for the Future initiative is building a worldwide network of 1,000 schools of excellence that will provide students the best quality of German lessons. The Goethe-Institut (Max Mueller Bhavan in South Asia) will choose 500 of them, and the first two schools from India signed the contracts on Monday, 9th June 2008.  more

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) organises an Essay Competition in India (Literaturwettbewerb) every year, for students of Bachelors and Masters programmes studying German as main or subsidiary subject. The winners can look forward to a partially sponsored trip to Germany for a Summer Course in German.  more
