The European Council on 11th and 12th December 2008 approved a European Economic Recovery Plan, equivalent to about 1.5 % of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the European Union (a figure amounting to around 200 billion euro). The European Council also reached agreement on the so-called "20/20/20" energy/climate change package for cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 20% by 2020.  more
