Measuring just three thousandths of a millimetre, they are smaller than a match head and their sensitive sensors can only be seen under a microscope. Despite their size, these new, intelligent mini-sensors could revolutionise consumer electronics, medicine and industry. On Wednesday, 3rd December, three engineers of the German company Bosch received the prestigious German Future Prize 2008 for developing these small sensors with big potential.  more

If you use a radio-controlled watch in Western Europe, or observe an airport clock, the chances are that both are being calibrated from a laboratory in the north of Germany. When European clocks were set back by one hour early Sunday (26th October) morning, ending summer time, the change was largely automated using signals from a bank of atomic clocks in Braunschweig.  more

At 6.20 am on Wednesday morning, India launched its first unmanned Moon mission. As Chandrayaan-1, a spacecraft built by ISRO blasted off, scientists celebrated the country’s space ambitions and scientific prowess. SIR-2, an infrared spectrometer designed and built by the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, is Germany’s contribution to the project.  more
